Millions of people wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on 20 October, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy - participants are asked to simply "go purple" on 20 October as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are. I participated and wore my "It Get's Better" project t shirt and purposefully went out. I didn't get any questions, but one of my male friends who is gay told me about this kid that he started talking to, who probably is suicidal. I was able to give my friend some information and places to contact for assistance or resources in the area. If wearing my purple just helped one person...it was worth it. I hope this kid is going to be alright.
